The Ambush at Lajitas
The golf         Located within 22,000 acres of Chihuahuan Desert at the foothills of the Chisos Mountains, The Ambush is a golf oasis in a barren land of nothingness. Designed by Austin-based architects Roy Bechtol and Randy Russell, this par 71 championship course is spectacular, to say the least.

For starters, over 100 bunkers litter a layout that routes you through lakes, wetlands, waterfalls, and even the Rio Grande River. The course might be the world’s first international golf course–the 19th hole (11-A) plays 110 yards over the river into Mexico with a green tilted toward the hole, creating a decent shot for a hole in one. The greens average 6,500 square feet in size.

The design theory involved laying out the course so that the holes slowly build in intensity, reaching a crescendo at the end. The course is heavily contoured to fit the area’s mountainous ridges, with peaks climbing upwards of 8,000 feet.

The back nine is more scenic, with natural creeks cutting across several holes and the Chisos Mountains as the backdrop for most shots. Holes 11-13 make up a enjoyable stretch of golf. No. 11 is a long par 4 with the Rio Grande on the right. Hole 12 is a dogleg left towards the mountains, and 13 is a short par 3 backing up to the park.

Since hardly anyone plays the course, conditions are superb. Everything is first class, from Titleist Pro V1s on the driving range to the most upscale merchandise. Caddies are available if you’re willing to put up with minor language barriers. Access to the course is limited to resort guests.

Other notes: A second course has been planned, The Outlaw, which will be routed more into the mountains and feature elevated tees with spectacular views.
