The golf
Owned by the city of Amarillo, Comanche Trail offers 36 holes of championship links-style golf at a very affordable price.
The original Tomahawk course, which opened in 1990, features a drainage ditch that runs through the layout and impacts holes 2-7.
There are no trees and the wind can really affect your round, but the fairways are generous and the large greens are welcome targets when facing a stiff cross wind. Watch out for the water, which impacts 14 holes.
Tomahawk’s signature hole is the dogleg-left No. 5. Playing it right to avoid the ditch spanning the entire left side of the fairway leaves a long iron approach. However, trying to carry the ditch leaves a short wedge into the green. Hole 9 is tough because of the narrow fairway and length (445 yards).
Robert Cupp designed the Arrowhead course, which features long rough and plenty of water and sand. No. 9 is a difficult par 5, only playing 484 yards from the blue tees, but water looms along the left of the fairway all the way around to the back of a well-bunkered green. Big hitters might want to go for the green in two following a solid tee shot. Hole 4, a 427-yard par 4, is rated the most difficult, featuring a tee shot over a small pond into a dogleg-left fairway. |
