BEFORE YOU TEE UP: A GUIDE TO THIS GUIDE
Some books, like the ones you were supposed to read in high school but bought the Cliff Notes for instead, look good on a shelf. This book, on the other hand, is meant to be used. Read it for fun or use it as a reference. Write in it. Waterproof it. Throw it in your truck. Spill beer on it. And yes, feel free to ignore a section if you like. You may not even play enough golf to have a handicap, but that may change, so keep The Texas Golf Bible handy.
Attempting to “rank” more than 900 courses is a fool's errand, and we don't attempt it. Instead, we toss all that subjectivity out the window and describe the courses in more detail than has ever been attempted before. Then you can decide what's right for you. After all, every course is different, and every experience is unique. Some of you may enjoy a heavily wooded setting, while others long for the treeless plains. We've done the research so you can call the shots.
Having read a lot of other golf books, we were determined not to regurgitate volumes of generic “golfspeak” regarding hole after hole after hole. Our focus is giving you a feel for the course, and knowing that the signature hole is a 'dogleg right with an uphill tee shot over water' doesn't always do the trick. Okay, occasionally we get into the detail of a hole, but only if helps shape your overall perception of the potential golf experience.
What good is a fax number to the discriminating traveler? Why do you need to know the name of the pro? How does it help you when the so-called golf guidebooks give you a P.O Box for an address to plug into your GPS or map software to determine directions? And if you need to know what the dress code is, you should not be reading this book. Does it do you any good to know that you can't wear cut off shorts and a tank top?
The Texas Golf Bible gives you information you can sink your teeth into-like where to eat for just about every town. Because you'll generally be “passing through” these spots, we decided against cramming in hotel information for every spot. If a place stands out and is worth consideration we mention it. If the town is too small and you're better off moving on, we'll recommend another destination.
We do not list specific pricing for each course; instead, we give you a feel for the overall quality and point out any extremes as necessary. There are bottom-liners who are particular about green fees, but a true golf bum ignores the price and pursues the experience, regardless of cost. That said, if a high-end course charging $100 a round is clearly not worth it, we'll tell you. And by the way, just because a course is named 'country club' doesn't mean that it's a ritzy private course.
If we had covered every course in multi-page detail, you wouldn't be able to lift this book. Still, The Texas Golf Bible aims to be the most comprehensive and interesting tour guide to Texas golf available. To do that, we could use your input since this is only the first of many editions, a living, breathing organism that will keep evolving just as the game and our enjoyment of it has evolved. So help us out. Jot down notes about places to eat and things to do on your golf travels, and drop us a line at authors@texasgolfbible.com. Now start planning your next round!
